Health science develops very rapidly along with development and technology development. Currently, we are entering the era of industrial revolution 4.0. Health is a very important factor for life, so it needs continuous scientific development through scientific studies and scientific symposium. One of the health problem that is closely related in Indonesia is the demographic transition where the number of elderly people will increase in number. So it needs to be prepared to maintain health for the elderly so that they can always live healthy and active lives.
Indonesia’s older population is growing at an unprecedented rate throughout the period of 1990-2020, as well as experiencing an increase in life expectancy from 66.7 years to 70.5 years. The number of older persons in Indonesia is expected to increase to 28.8 million (11% of the total population) in 2020, and 80 million (28.68%) in 2050. The longer the life of a person, the more the person is prone to experience physical, mental, spiritual, economic and social problems. Based on RISKESDAS (Basic Health Research 2013), the diseases found amongst the older persons in Indonesia include hypertension, osteoarthritis, dental-oral problems, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and diabetes mellitus (DM) (MoH of the Republic of Indonesia, 2014). The emergence of various diseases and disorders can lead to functional disabilities in older persons, with more severe conditions requiring the help of others, hence the need for long-term care (LTC). Disability as measured by the ability to perform activities of everyday life or Activity of Daily Living (ADL) affects approximately 51%, with increase in age based on Basic Health Research 2018, the total dependency was around 6%, mostly were found among older persons with stroke 14%). Older person were still independent relatively high (63%). It means that active ageing program should be improved; hence multi-disciplinary and multi sector approach would be highly needed.
Yogyakarta is a region of more than 7 percent elderly residents. According to 2010 population census data, the population of elderly in Yogyakarta is at the age of 70 years that reached 48.2 percent. Society's participation of DIY is quite high against the problems of the elderly, such as the implementation of elderly integrated health services, and elderly family build for elderly families which became a component in the standard health services minimum. In addition, currently the Kota Yogyakarta Government already has several programs for elderly. Those programs include the Healthy Elderly Home, Assisting Elderly Displaced. Meanwhile, the other of public participation for the elderly is the existence of a School of the Elderly. Thus, cross-sectorial efforts to cope with the problem of the elderly are already running at Yogyakarta.
